I-74 Upgrade, Peoria, Illinios

Foth completed plans, specifications, estimates and construction services for the reconstruction of a 2.3 mile segment of the overall 8.5 mile project. This project received a 2007 Engineering Excellence Award from ACEC-Illinois.

I-74 which traverses the Peoria urban area, was originally constructed in 1957.  Heavy traffic volumes and a high accident rate contributed to the need for reconstruction. The project was the largest single public works project in Illinois outside of Chicago. Its scale was so large, the IDOT hired an oversight consultant, then split the project into six sections-- three on the west side of the Illinois River, and three on the east side. Foth designed section 6 on the east side of the river.

Foth's design services included replacing the existing pavement with new, continuously reinforced concrete pavement, adding a partial truck climbing lane with closed barrier type median, reconstructing the existing partial cloverleaf interchange, traffic signage and drainge and traffic staging.

Foth coordinated closely with other consultants to ensure all segments "fit" together in unified annual contracts. The result was a collaborative, staged construction plan that accommodated continual traffic access on this segment.
