Water Facility, Mahomet, Illinois

The village of Mahomet is a thriving and growing community, and as such, its municipal water supply has been strained in recent years to meet the increase in demand associated with this growth. The municipal water treatment plant improvements have tripled the capacity of the previous plant and provides greatly needed softening treatment. This project increased the plant capacity from 600 gpm to 1800 gpm. Foth was responsible for the design of:

  • Two new 600 gpm package iron removal units for aeration, detention, and filtration
  • Four new 9-foot diameter ion exchange softeners
  • New softener building
  • New high service pumps
  • Chemical feed systems
  • Converted brine storage tank
  • Converted backwash wastewater holding tank
  • New backwash pump station
  • Upgraded electrical service and emergency power systems
  • Miscellaneous site improvements

Challenges

A major challenge for the project design was the expansion of the existing facilities which were on a site already congested with little room for growth. Foth served as a consultant to the village's engineer for this project and was charged with the primary tasks of  process and electrical design with oversight of the construction and bidding documents preparation, permitting and bidding process assistance, and construction guidance. The project was completed in
2005.
