Sparta's wastewater treatment plant was last upgraded in the early 1960s. By 1989, the plant no longer was able to meet the requirements of its discharge permit and was notified by the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources that improvements had to be made.

Wastewater Treatment Improvements

The wastewater plant expansion and upgrade includes a raw sewage lift station, grit removal facilities, extended aeration basins, final clarifiers, pump station and renovation, and modifications the solids handling systems. The trickling filters upgraded, including new rotary distribution and dechlorination was integrated into the chlorine disinfection system. Expanded sludge handling facilities include anaerobic digestion, sludge storage diffused air mixing, and a liquid track loading Sludge is applied to agricultural lands with the a 3,000-gallon, all-wheel injection vehicle.

Benefits:

  • Plans and specifications for an upgraded treatment plant were fast-tracked to be able to begin construction as soon as possible.
  • By fast-tracking the project, Sparta qualified for a low-interest loan from the Wisconsin Clean Water Fund to upgrade its wastewater treatment plant.
