Automated Pallet to Pallet Cross Dock Operations

The U.S. Postal service wanted to investigate and pursue alternative, automated processing solutions with the intention of minimizing staging on the work floor, improving the sort rate, and improving job safety and ergonomics of mail processing personnel. Foth investigated the existing processes and provided four concept designs, including system layouts, descriptions, and elevation drawings, control schemes and construction cost estimates.

Challenges:

  • Eliminate manual depalletizing  and sorting operations
  • Eliminate mixing of trays with sack mail
  • Minimize staging of mail on the work floor
  • Palletize all outgoing mail trays (random mix of all 3 tray sizes on pallet)
  • Increase throughput by 133%

Benefits:

  • Fully automated depalletizing of letter trays
  • Options for varying levels of automation for sorting, palletizing, and stretch-wrapping, ranging from 720 to 5000 trays per hour
  • Improved safety and reduced ergonomic issues through reduced manual handling

Project Included:

  • Depalletizers
  • Facers
  • Robots
  • Tray conveyors
  • Low speed palletizers
  • High speed palletizers
  • Stretchwrappers
