Cedar Falls’ University Avenue Corridor Reconstruction

Background

Hired by the City of Cedar Falls to assist with their largest roadway project to date, our team provided planning, engineering design and construction services for safety and efficiency improvements made to University Avenue, a 2-mile major urban roadway. Our developed concept aligned with the City’s vision to calm traffic, lessen travel time, improve safety, lower up-front capital investment and operational costs, enhance commercial access, support “living streets”, and remain compatible with the existing network.

Approach

Being a strategically significant commercial corridor, it was vital to minimize impact to the community and surrounding businesses. In order to do so, while maintaining an aggressive completion schedule, our team utilized technology such as mobile LiDAR scanning and BIM modeling in reducing design time, modernizing workflows, enabling the reuse of rich digital deliverables throughout the project lifecycle, and increasing our ability to collaborate internally and with key stakeholders.

Key project tasks included urban roadway design, multi-lane roundabouts, storm water management, public and private utility coordination, and significant public engagement efforts. We worked closely with City staff to devise a phased approach that included public involvement such as open houses and a project-focused website.

Results

Over the next 25 years, improvements involving safety, travel time, fuel usage, emissions reduction, maintenance, traffic operations, and pedestrian and transit facility efficiencies will deliver a combined benefit of more than $36M in user-cost savings.
