Dias Landing Pier Extension & Floating Docks

Background

The Town of Dartmouth developed a business plan to implement a marina in alignment with their Harbor Plan. The existing timber pier at the Arthur F. Dias Town Landing, which was designed before the current impacts of sea level rise, frequently became inundated by extreme tides, rendering it inaccessible about six days per month. This situation underscored the need for a comprehensive solution to ensure continuous access and address the challenges posed by rising sea levels.

Approach

Foth played a pivotal role in addressing these issues. The project aimed to rebuild and extend the existing pier to deep water and install a floating dock marina. Our involvement began with providing inspection and bathymetric and topographic survey services to document existing conditions and determine the need for pier replacement. Our team engaged with stakeholders to develop the basis of design and conceptualize the project. Once a concept was developed, we assisted the town in securing grant funding to complete the project, including performing wave and wind load analysis, structural design for the pier replacement/extension, and bid phase services. Throughout the construction process, Foth managed the project to ensure it was completed on schedule and within budget.

Results

The project was a significant success, delivering numerous benefits to the community. The new pier and marina enhanced accessibility, even during extreme tides, and contributed to local economic growth as the operational marina exceeded demand expectations. The project was funded through a state grant with local matching funds and was delivered on schedule and within the grant budget. The success of the new marina led the town to begin planning for further expansion, demonstrating the project’s positive impact and the effective collaboration between the Town of Dartmouth and Foth.
