Creating a Culture of Belonging: Why Relationships Matter During Onboarding

When people think about onboarding, they often think about training, paperwork, and getting up to speed in a new role. While those elements are important, I’ve always believed successful onboarding is about much more than completing a checklist.

At Foth, we created our six-month integration plan to help new members build meaningful connections and gain a strong understanding of our organization beyond their immediate role. We recognized that long-term success isn’t just about learning responsibilities. It’s about developing relationships, understanding our culture, and seeing how your work contributes to something bigger.

The program is designed to create intentional opportunities for new members to engage with leaders, project teams, and peers across the company. Through those connections, members begin to build the foundation for a successful and fulfilling career at Foth.

Relationships Create a Stronger Start

One of the most important factors in helping people feel connected and thrive is the relationships they build early in their journey.

When new members join Foth, they naturally spend most of their time learning from their immediate team. While those relationships are essential, I believe it’s equally important to help them establish connections beyond their day-to-day work. Those broader networks create opportunities for collaboration, learning, and support that can benefit members throughout their careers.

Just as importantly, these relationships help members understand how work gets done across the organization. They gain visibility into different teams, perspectives, and areas of expertise while developing a stronger sense of belonging. That sense of connection often becomes a key driver of engagement and long-term success.

The Impact We’ve Seen

Over time, we’ve seen the value that intentional integration can have for both new members and the organization as a whole.

Members often become connected more quickly, develop broader networks, and gain confidence navigating Foth’s culture and resources. The structured touchpoints throughout the six-month experience create opportunities for meaningful conversations, questions, and feedback, helping members feel supported during their early days at Foth.

For Foth, these relationships strengthen collaboration across business units and reinforce the culture that makes our organization unique. The integration experience also helps create a more consistent and positive onboarding journey for every new member who joins our team.

Building Belonging That Lasts

My hope for every new member is simple: that they complete the six-month integration experience feeling connected, supported, and confident in their place at Foth.

I want them to understand not only the responsibilities associated with their role, but also how they contribute to our shared success. When people can see the impact of their work and understand how they fit into the broader organization, they are more empowered to grow, collaborate, and make meaningful contributions.

Most importantly, I hope they develop strong relationships and a sense of belonging that continue long after the formal integration program ends. Those connections often become the foundation for future growth, development, and success.

At the end of the day, onboarding is about people. By investing in relationships from the beginning, we help new members build the confidence, support systems, and connections they need to thrive, while strengthening the organization as a whole.
