Foth won two awards this fall for outstanding work on projects in Iowa and Wisconsin. The Iowa Chapter of the American Public Works Association (APWA) honored Foth with a Project of the Year Award (Disaster or Emergency Construction/Repair category) for the E Avenue Reconstruction project in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
Massive flooding in Cedar Rapids caused a section of an existing 3,000 LF brick storm culvert to fail under a City of Cedar Rapids roadway. Foth provided design, grant compliance, in-depth environmental review, construction administration and observation services, and street reconstruction to meet the client’s “complete streets policy” and reduce impacts to the existing 97 residential properties in the corridor. Project results included an improved storm conveyance for flood prone areas and a multimodal minor arterial linking the northwest side to the river front.
The Associated General Contractors (AGC) of Wisconsin recognized Foth with a Build Wisconsin Award (Municipal/Utility/Underground category) for the Hoods Creek Sewage Attenuation Basin project in Caledonia, Wisconsin.
The Hoods Creek lift station reached the end of its useful life and was unable to safely convey sewage demands, especially during peak wet weather storm events. Foth prepared a facility plan that analyzed alternatives to convey future wastewater needs through the year 2035. The recommended alternative was to construct a sewage attenuation basin upstream of the Hoods Creek lift station.
The project is located within a planned subdivision and the control building was designed to conform to the subdivision’s architectural standards. The basin is completely underground covered by turf grass and landscape features. The Caledonia Utility District now has certainty that the sanitary flows during wet weather events from future development in the industrial park and surrounding areas can be managed effectively without compromising the capacity of the existing Hoods Creek Lift Station and other downstream facilities.
