Background

Integrys Energy owns and operates a coal combustion electric generation station in Rothschild, Wisconsin. Foth was hired to provide them with closure options for coal combustion residue (CCR) ponds located on their property.

Approach

Foth conducted field drilling activities to determine the nature and extent of the CCR placement. We performed land surveying to determine the existing conditions in the vicinity of and at the bottom of the three ponds within the project area. The project required accommodation for the continuation of the liquid discharge after the existing coal units are converted to natural gas.

Results

Foth evaluated the options and provided cost estimates to construct each option. Working closely with Integrys, Foth designed a preferred option for the CCR ponds including mitigation of other nearby facilities. The result was a new single pond that will provide long-term liquids management for the existing system and proper closure of the legacy ponds.
