Reducing Risk at NRG Stadium with 3D LiDAR Scan

Background

Major sports and entertainment venues depend on roof systems that protect people, events, and public investment. When the retractable roof of the landmark NRG Stadium — home of the Texans NFL team and countless entertainment events — had reached an age where original drawings no longer matched existing conditions, Harris County Sports & Convention Corporation began exploring options.

After more than two decades of service, facility leaders moved forward on a large-scale replacement of the roof membrane systems. That effort required accurate, current information to support design decisions and responsible reinvestment. Clear existing-conditions data became a critical first step before moving forward with full replacement.

Approach

Our team supported replacement planning by creating a precise digital record of existing roof conditions. Advanced capture methods documented both roof systems and translated that information into a clear, usable model. Coordination with engineering partners added independent review and strengthened confidence in the final deliverables. This focused approach produced reliable information that supported design coordination and construction planning for a complex roof replacement effort.

Results

Final deliverables established a dependable foundation for a major roof modernization project. Accurate digital records reduced uncertainty during design, improved coordination among teams, and limited reliance on assumptions. Benefits extended beyond the project team. Clear documentation supported reinvestment in a landmark venue that hosts professional sports, concerts, and civic events.

By informing full roof replacement planning, this work contributes to the long-term performance and longevity of one of Houston’s most important public facilities.
